Cheap flight to Venice (home from Wroclaw a week from Saturday), then onto Terme Montegrotto for the night. SSW of Padova, the spa town has views of the Eugania Hills, home to many wineries. The hotel offered free bike rentals (1). Arriving at Castello de Catajo, we just missed the last entrance at 6:00. But, they did let us walk through the parched gardens (2).
A nearby winery offered a delicious sparkling spumante, made with local soprino grapes. We bought a bottle after the woman asked where we staying and she judged the bottle would make it back to the hotel in our bike basket. Back to town for dinner and the hotel after about 7.5 miles.
(1) Riding a rental made me glad I had brought over my own bike last month for a ride through the Netherlands. The bike was small and needed air in the tires, but it beat walking.
(2) Heat waves and drought in many parts of Europe this summer. The garden fountains are off and the pools empty.
