Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

August 9, 2018

A short (but expensive (1)) two hour flight across Zambia brought us to Livingstone, on the Zambia side of the Zambezi river at Victoria Falls. We walked across the combined road/railway bridge spanning the Zambezi Gorge to the town of Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

After dropping our backpacks at the hotel, we walked to the Victoria Falls National Park to view the Falls (and get quite wet). There are actually a series of falls cascading over the 300 + foot escarpment. There were people rappeling into the gorge, flying over the Falls in ultra-light aircraft, and bungee jumping off the bridge. We just walked.

We were surprised to see warthogs and bush bock grazing on the edge of the precipice adjacent to the falls. Apparently, they were attracted by the abundance of falls-spray fed grass.

(1) I have flown round trip from Boston to Europe for less than half the price of the flight across Zambia There is only one airline in the route, and the only alternative to the overpriced flight was a bone- rattling two day bus ride. The price thus demonstrates the power of monopolies. It was worth it to have spent a few days at South Luangwa.
